About Edgar Allan Poe

Poe, a great 19th-century American author, was born on Jan 19, 1809, in Boston, Mass. Both his parents died when Poe was two years old, and he was taken into the home of John Allan, a wealthy tobacco exporter of Richmond, Va.

Motto for “The Stylus”

Poe composed this motto for The Stylus, the independent literary magazine he devoted years to founding but never achieved. It encapsulates his editorial philosophy: rigorous fidelity to truth, indifferent to pleasing any faction. The motto is attributed to “Launcelot Canning,” a transparent pseudonym for Poe himself. The first line survives only in truncated form.

——— unbending that all men
Of thy firm TRUTH may say — ‘Lo! this is writ
With the antique iron pen.’
