Kelly Markel: PHANTOMS

Phantoms

I try so hard to forget the past
To trudge through the shadows my sin has cast
How badly I long to just move on
Disregard thoughts of times that are gone
Yet the memories haunt me all the same
Toying with my emotions as if it were a game
Desperation frequently grasps my soul
Spirals me down a dark black hole
I inhale guilt and exhale shame
These emotions of which I cannot tame
I wish upon stars that aren't really there
Frantically searching for someone to care
Embracing my reflection every opportunity I'm given
I pray for the dead and curse the living
I stumble through life looking out of hazy eyes
Clouded over by hurt and twisted lies
Still, there's a flicker of hope somewhere inside
Just very faint, yet a will to survive
Maybe someday that flicker will become bright
Lighten my life and uncloud my sight
Now though, I sit in the melancholy dark
Just waiting for that one tiny spark
